In many fighting games, projectiles are widely used by many characters. But, how do you tell good zoning from mindless fireball chucking?
Zoning is ultimately the controlling of space. If Ryu is full screen away, he can still control horizontal space by throwing a hadoken. Yun from full screen has no such option. So, Ryu can build meter with fireballs and keep Yun from casually strolling over to him. The problem is, jumping completely nullifies fireballs. To solve this, we need to also maintain vertical space control. That's where Ryu's Shoryuken comes in to stop jumpins. Yun now cannot walk nor jump forward past a certain point without being in danger. This is basic effective zoning.
"Spammers" often have little regard for vertical space control. They will often jump away and corner themselves, make no attempt at anti-airs, or throw fireballs at a range where they can be punished via jumpins or ultras.
(I'll elaborate more on an actual computer)
