Ok this isn't a rant or anything, its just me talking about how stupid the Japanese are being. Warning this will be quite long, i have a lot to say
First of all let me say each of these company's that i'm going to talk about are some of my favorite company's in the gaming world. But just because i have a lot of love tor them doesn't mean i can't see how stupid they're being.
Sega
At the end of last year Sega Japan did a copyright blitz on any Youtube video showing footage of any of the Shinning games. Material from systems as old as the NES was copyright flagged and many large Youtube channels were given copyright black marks and many small channels were shutdown completely, just for showing game footage from a 15 year old game. Now there is a lots of theory's to why Sega Japan did this. I'll just talk quickly about to the two most common.
1) There has been many Shinning games in several different genres. a popular Shinning genre was the RPG's not all of the Shinning games came to NA and EU. Shinning Force 3. has sparked a huge controversy. SF3 was released in Japan in 2 parts. But in NA and EU it was released in one part with a different ending, so we only got SF3 part 1 with an ending so we didn't need to play SF3 part 2. Some people in NA took upon themselves to translate SF3 part 2 to English. You still had to buy the Japanese version of the game but a program would change it all to English for you. This annoyed the Japanese. Sega Japan brought out a new version of the Shinning games which are brawlers (they're actually fun) But There was a twitter campaign to save Shinning RPG games, it was called SOS save our shinning. Sega Japan took this really badly, they saw this as Americans bashing there new games and trying to tell them how to make games. And it was shortly after this that Sega Japan copyright claimed anything on Youtube that had Shinning games in it. Many people think this was Sega Japan lashing out because of the SOS campaign.
2)Another popular theory is. Sega Japan wanted to get rid of anything on Youtube that has Shinning footage, so when you do a Youtube search you only come up with Segas official videos of their new games. They were basically controlling the search results so it worked how they want it to.
Nintendo
Nintendo, did things slightly different, they banned anyone monetizing any video that showed Nintendo games in it. This was a shot at "Lets plays videos" You can make LP's but don't try and make money off of it. Which in a way is kinda understandable. The whole LP argument will be coming to a head very soon i'm sure of it. when is a "lets play" ok? I'll talk more about that in a bit. But Nintendos actions don't just affect LP'ers they also affect people that advertise and review games. When you make a living by making YT videos and Twitch streams, and a company tells you "You can't monetize footage of their game". What would the outcome be? The Youtuber/Twitcher just won't make videos of them games. Good job Nintendo you have just thrown away free advertisement. And with the state of the WII U ATM, i don't think you can afford to throw away free advertisement
Nintendo at EVO 2013. Peoples game choice "Super Smash Bros Melee". Just hours before EVO started Nintendo Japan told EVO they could play the game in the tournament but they couldn't stream it on Twitch. One can only guess this is because EVO's streams were monetized. It took hours of Nintendo America trying to explain to Nintendo Japan, that if EVO dropped SSB the only people it would hurt would be Nintendo. And that to get there game played at EVO was great publicity, and free advertising for the SSB brand.
Square Enix
Final Fantasy 14, there was an NDA (non disclosure agreement) on all videos during the beta, and this was only just lifted today. also FF14 as a no monetization policy for its Youtube and Twitch videos. So basically all the famous Youtubers that make videos of games as their living will not be making any FF14 videos. Again another Japanese company throwing away free publicity and advertising.
_________
Hearthstone a Blizzard card game went into closed beta last week. I heard something ridiculous like there is already 60,000 videos of it on Twitch and Youtube. I follow a lot of people on twitter and though's that are playing are constantly talking about it, what decks they are using, how many time they die in the arena. and them that aren't in beta are all asking "how do i get in the beta". There is a buzz about this game and all the advertising has been free.
(Lets plays, are Youtube/Twitch videos of someone playing through the game)
Right the whole "Lets play" argument is very complicated and will most likely end up in a court of law. IMO lets playing things like Tekken or FF14, thing without a story or much of a story to spoil, should be fine. A lets play of a brand new game like "The last of us" that is all story is not fine. If i could watch a LP of "The last of us" then why would i need to go buy the game. Also LPs of old games are fine IMO.
And this is the thing i don't think the Japanese understand how to use internet to there advantage "WTF cough cough" which is an amazing thing to say, you would think the Japanese so technologically driven would embrace Youtube and Twitch. Rather than seeing Youtube and Twitch as people trying to get rich off of your game, they should be seeing this as a partnership. As we scratch your back with free publicity, and you scratch ours by not trying to destroy our livelihood with copyright claims.
Sorry that was a bit long lol, if you got to the end of it well done, let me know what your thoughts are
